Hair Extension FAQs

How often do I need to maintain my hair extensions?
Typically, every 6 to 8 weeks is the average for a maintenance shedule.

How long does it take to get hair extensions?
Generally, the process can take between several hours up to a full day depending upon the type and the amount of extensions that will be added to your hair.

There are horror stories of hair extensions tangling up.  How do I avoid this?

Whenever hair extensions tangle, it is almost always a problem of hair quality.  Quality human hair is expensive.  All the cuticles are running in the same direction--hair is cut off a donors head and kept in the same direction, and hair is virtually unprocessed.  Cheaper quality hair is taken from brushes or off the floor, stripped of its cuticles and then coated with a silicone layer to make it appear shiny.  After a few washes, the silicone layer washes off and the hair becomes tangled and unruly.  With quality hair, tangling is usually not an issue.  If hair does tangle, use a wide tooth comb and start from the bottom and work your way up while holding the top part to keep it from shedding or stretching.

How are hair extensions attached?
Hair extensions can be attached using a variety of methods including braiding, tiny locs, heat clamps and fusion sewing.  Some extensions can even be clipped in.

What types of human hair are used for hair extensions?
The main types of human hair available are European, Indian and Asian hair.

Will extensions damage my hair?
Extensions should not damage your hair if properly cared for and maintained.  That is why it is crucial to choose a reputable salon to apply your hair extensions.

Can I brush, curl, blow dry and wash my hair extensions?
Yes.  You can blow dry, curl, brush, and wash your hair extensions. When brushing, be careful, and if you have a tangle, hold the hair while you brush it. Though you can wash everyday you will find that your extensions hair will stay clean and curled for days. We suggest letting hair air dry and using a wide tooth comb to detangle.  Hair will dry out sooner if blow dryers, flat irons, and other heat styling tools are used

How do I wash my hair extensions?

Wash the hair in one direction from top to bottom. Avoid washing hair upside down. Use shampoos and conditioners that are for dry hair and add the most moisture. Wash hair right after swimming. When brushing your hair, start from the bottom and work your way up while holding the top.

Can I color or perm my hair extensions?
If you do decide to perm or color your hair extensions, it is best to use a semi- permanent color or color conditioner and not peroxide as many hair extensions have already been processed and sterilized with a chemical treatment.

What types of hair products should I use?
The best choice for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products are those that add moisture back into the hair.  Products for oily hair or strippers that take out chlorine or product build up should not be used as they will leave the hair dry.  Use styling products that are zero or low alcohol. Products for dry hair are the best. Spray in conditioners and  are wonderful for the ends.

Can I swim and go in the ocean?
Swimming in swimming pools and hot tubs is okay, but it is best to wash hair right after swimming. We recommend avoiding swimming in the ocean and in salt water as the salt can take all the moisture out of the hair and cause it to tangle.  It is a great idea to add a spray in conditioner after swimming.

Will anyone know I am wearing hair extensions?
When properly applied, no one should be able to tell that you are wearing hair extensions. We will assist you in choosing the right color and curl pattern so that your extensions will be virtually undetectable.
